jr tofukuji station - kyoto, shiga, japan
Competitively based Selection for the study abroad programs at the College of Architecture create an intense learning atmosphere abroad. Part of the Japan study abroad program involved redesigning a rail station of our choice within Kyoto. JR Tofukuji Station lacked spatial communication necessary for efficient flow through a space. It also lacked the necessary segregation of space for the two separate rail line companies operating through this station. Surrounding bamboo forests and world renowned zen gardens provided inspiration for a space that would accomplish both tasks by providing a coherent visual journey and appropriate separation of the two rail companies' operational spaces. The space would also become dynamic as the trains approached the platforms causing the canopy structure to undulate similarly to bamboo forests during a stiff breeze. This undulation would cause momentary modulations in surface geometries and light simulating zen experiences found in traditional Japanese spaces surrounding the rail station.
